Sway Textiles is run by textile designers Petra Giliomee and Antoinette du Plessis.
Sway’s design philosophy is straightforward: We do what we like, and we like pattern.
For Sway, pattern is more than mere decoration of fabric. Everyday objects – so common as to be virtually invisible like matchsticks, washing pegs or safety pins – are repeated to create deliberately off-beat patterns. The objects, chosen for their potential graphic qualities, seem to raise questions but no answers are required.
In the Sway studio, everything is drawn or painted by hand. We make minimal use of technology, as we regard simple processes as most suited to our kind of pattern; our prints are also screen printed by hand. Like our printing, we outsource most aspects of our production to small businesses in Cape Town.
The Sway range of easy-going printed garments contributes to the vibrant worlds of African textiles and fashion, which flourish where discerning buyers look for excellence and quirky individualism instead of global sameness.
